Catching Up with Cassey – A Proud Habitat St. Johns Homeowner 8/2024

Update on Cassey

Cassey has been a Habitat St. Johns homeowner in our Canopy Oaks community since 2021.  I had the pleasure of catching up with her this month and getting an update.

Needless to say, Cassey and her family are doing very well!  Cassey’s daughter is now 19 and living in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Her son is 17 and just graduated.

Here is what Cassey had to say.

Cassey said “I cannot emphasize enough the stability alone that comes from owning a Habitat St. Johns home. Homeownership provides a sense of security and is a basic need all people should have. The county is growing so quickly, and the housing market is out of control. Safe and affordable housing should be available for everyone, especially the regular working people in our community”.

“I am so glad I have my home. I am so happy that I can use my artistic freedom to paint my home the way I want”.

Cassey recalled when she learned she was qualified and selected to buy a Habitat St. Johns home. She remembered crying and feeling a sense of relief.

She said she will have her home paid off in less than 10 years.

She is currently working for Bozard Lincoln and enjoying life in her Habitat St. Johns home.

She has some plans for her home.  On her wish list is relandscaping her yard and upgrading her kitchen, including adding a disposal and dishwasher.

Below is Cassey’s original story from 2021

Original Story – 2021:

“I literally pinch myself every day!”

That is how grateful Cassey is for her Habitat for Humanity home.  As a single mom with two teenage children, Cassey had the most stressful time after her divorce finding safe, decent and affordable housing.

“I really got a wakeup call,” explains Cassey.  The cost of renting a home or a safe apartment was astonishing and not something that a single mother could afford and still provide the basics of food, clothing and medicine for her family”.  Luckily, Cassey had family that she was able to stay with for a short amount of time, but she was sleeping on the couch and having an autistic teen who needs structure, the situation was becoming more and more stressful by the day.

Cassey did an internet search for affordable housing and found Habitat for Humanity’s website.  She came into the office in tears but left with a sense of accomplishment that she was going to finally be able to buy an affordable home.

Cassey immediately began earning her 250 “sweat equity” hours that is a pillar of the Habitat for Humanity program.  She worked side by side with fellow future homeowners and Habitat volunteers to build a home in Canopy Oaks, Habitat’s newest affordable housing community.  Cassey absolutely loved everything about working on the home!

“I am super proud of my home,” beams Cassey.  She has made her home in a beautiful, loving sanctuary where she and her family can feel safe and stable, knowing that they will never be close to homelessness again.
