How Habitat St. Augustine Advocates for Affordable Housing

Not only does Habitat for Humanity of St. Augustine/St. Johns County (“Habitat St. Augustine”), build homes, but we advocate for affordable housing at a local level.  Alex Mansur, Vice Chairman of the Habitat St. Augustine Board of Directors, is a member of the Affordable Housing Advisory Committee (“AHAC”) in St. Johns County.  The nine-member committee is responsible for reviewing policies, land development regulations, the Comprehensive Plan Policy, and other aspects of the County’s policies and procedures that affect the cost of housing. In addition, the AHAC is responsible for making recommendations to encourage affordable housing, such as expedited permitting, modification of impact fees and lot requirements.  Alex has been a member of AHAC since 2018 and has seen some positive changes in the County’s affordable housing policies but acknowledges there is more work to be done.

“At Habitat, the vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live and to make that happen, advocacy needs to begin locally and that’s why I became involved in both AHAC and Habitat St. Augustine”, said Alex.
